Decor and Style inspirations

I don't stick to a particular style of decorating. I love to mix and match and hence I call it my own style of decorating. I am decor enthusiast and love everything that is aesthetically pleasing. I like my home to be unique to me it is a place that has been evolving with my decor aesthetics each passing day. I put my heart and soul to decorate my home and totally love the fact that it looks lived in and not like the designer homes that we see in magazines.

Favorite room or corner in the house

My favorite space in my home is my work-space. It's a place where new ideas are born and creative juices flow. I spend hours painting, writing, creating stuff and reading here. I have decorated this space with some of my favourite and close to my heart accessories. My home studio is full of positivity and warmth. For me, it is a little piece of heaven.

Your favourite piece of furniture or accessory

My favourite piece of furniture is the magnificent dresser that I totally adore for its size, color, beautiful patterns and sleek design. It has sufficient storage space and houses a vanity stool too. Dresser top is quite wide that makes it a versatile piece of furniture.

Proudest DIY (I know you have many :))

No artefact in the world can equate the charm and satisfaction that a handmade stuff brings and hence I love to create stuff especially to adorn my abode. Most of the decor accessories in my home are handmade and handpainted and I love all my DIYs. I create the stuff with equal enthusiasm and love so choosing one out of so many would be really hard for me.

the wall mural

Favourite shopping (for design and decor) destinations

I don't shop often instead I create stuff myself. But if I find something extraordinary that can not be created then I go ahead and bring it home. I love to shop at Dastkari haat, flea markets, @Home and antique stores.

Priced possession(s)

Recently I have created an Indian art gallery wall in my living room. I have created around eight different Indian art forms like mud-mirror work of Rajasthan, Madhubani painting of Bihar, Mural of Kerala, Warli of Maharashtra, Bengal painting of West Bengal, Gond of MP, Pattachitra of Odisha, Kalamkari of Andhra Pradesh while Tanjore of Tamilnadu and Ganjifa card of Mysore are gifted to me by dear friends. So this wall in my living room that depicts rich cultural heritage of India is definitely my prized possession.

That's simply amazing :)

Anything you would add or change in design(layout) or decor

I just hate the sofa in my living room though it is a teak wood sofa and I recently gave it a makeover then too I just don't like the look of it. I wish I could buy a new one but because we keep moving from one city to another after every few years the idea doesn't seem feasible.

Your secret mantra and tips for a cosy home

Keep your home clean and de-cluttered. Don't follow the rules instead, make your own so that your home reflects your personality. A home should be decorated in a way that it should never allow the eye to settle in one place. So add lots of character and drama with accessories. Put your soul into it and stamp it with your personality.
They, like all other pieces of lovely furniture, found me on craigslist. My set is made of rosewood and leather. and the seller told me that he picked them from Bombay Store in the late 1970s.
I made some amazing friends for life while living in this complex. And also spent the initial days of my pregnancy here before we moved back to India. This home was where most of my furniture came in. I religiously scouted thrift stores and craigslist to find vintage mid century pieces of my choice, So here we go.

Welcome home...
The front door and entryway.
And back to the living area- a glance at how our furniture collection evolved. This lady is a bundle of talent - an excellent cook, keeps a perfect home, an avid gardener, an amazing painter and most of all, a great human being. She juggles all this while being a busy IT professional.

Her home has an amazing collection of antiques, her artwork and DIYs. I had previously featured her antique air blower she picked from her travel to the middle east. This time, she spoke about her Aranmula kannadi and I had to share it on the blog :)

For flickr users and fans, Meena Sriram needs no introduction. I have been following her work for a long time now and love the way she uses calligraphy around her beautiful home. Hopping over to her place for a cup of tea and a lively chat with the lovely lady. :)
Decor and Style inspirations
I would say my decor has become more simplified than it seems in the pictures or maybe it comes across that way too. Its hard to use one word to describe my decor style, since I go mostly by instinct and don't follow any particular style,.I ruthlessly edit, and prefer an airy laid back feel to the room with pops of color through textiles. I was hugely inspired by Archana Srinivas who run the decor blog Rang decor, I think she was one of the reason's I was inspired to try my hand at photography as well. My mother is an amazingly talented person when it comes to design and decor, and I learn a lot from her.

My favourite accessories would be chalk boards, and cork boards. I find these very versatile, you can change what you have on them seasonally or even otherwise, I do like to have inspiring quotes all over my home, and I like reflecting on them every time I glance at them .. sometimes I even just tape my own art or daughter's art to the wall directly..it works in an odd way. I like pretty tea and coffee mugs but am careful not to let my collection grow.
Try to bring in colour and creativity with storage so this contributes to your decor and you don't have to pick up pieces that are only purely decorative. And its easier to work with less than more, .. just a few well thought out pieces and accessories, and there's a lot of inspiration when it comes to colour and ideas on various decor blogs, just be careful to balance it out with who you are. Your decor does not have to be perfect, it just needs to feel happy and be home.. a place to express yourself creatively, but more importantly to nurture all the loving bonds in your life..
Clean line modernism influenced designers and consumers all over the world. India is where many such pieces were custom made for home owners. And i am glad we can still afford such custom made luxury (if we find the right artisan)

I was in awe when I saw the piece in person. A lovely piece of art!!!
My volunteering and activism. People who know me are aware of my staunch green living ethos and Vegan lifestyle. I am proud to raise a vegan three year old who is very kind and loving. He is a breastfed, cloth diapered baby who was introduced to solids via baby led weaning. All this came with its set of challenges but I am glad I did not give up when the going was tough.

This weekend went quite well, attended a workshop on nutrition and then met up with my Breastfeeding support group. This first week of August was declared World Breastfeeding Week. And I, being a part of the worldwide Breastfeeding network, would not miss my city based meetup.

I felt the need to be a part of this amazing peer networking support group due ot all the misinformation floating around the whole concept of breastfeeding. New mothers are fed a lot of myth and end up in a formula trap. My involvement in the network is to promote breastfeeding as nothing out of ordinary but as a natural and normal method to keep the baby fed. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is 6 months old and then introduction of solids while breastmilk remains the primary source of nutrition in the first year. Breastfeeding comes naturally to a baby while it takes some learning for the mother. I highly recommend two books to every new mother/parent. This is my first post of a series on homes my husband and I have shared over the years. We lived in lovely apartments in beautiful cities. Whatever furniture we had, always worked for us and the space. Throughout our transition, one thing in common was our determination to buy everything pre-loved.

This was our first apartment just after I moved out of my Grad school. It was a 700 square feet one bedroom apartment with a small patio, and ample light and ventilation. We made a cozy eclectic looking place for ourselves on a shoe string budget :). We, however, did not stop exploring the city for our kind of furniture.
Clean line pencil legged furniture, geometric shapes appealed to me even before I knew the era and design timeline these design styles belonged to. Most homes in India got such furniture custom made by local carpenters and were inspired by what was seen in movies. (Do check out my series on art direction in Movies - Movies, Masti and Magic). It was only a blessing when I moved to Graduate School and was exposed to the whole array of garage sale finds, flea market and charity store treasures. The next few posts would be a peek into my living spaces over the last few years. So stay tuned :)
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As a rule, I never buy extravagantly expensive stuff, because as a family we are not materialistic, and almost border on minimalism. We have the same stuff from the time we got married, and some of it handed down by our respective families. We are perfectly content. That said, being the décor lover I am, I do like to buy things that catch my eye, occasionally.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just yesterday I was at a store signing up space to display my product. I saw the staff removing an owl from their display. It was a beautiful piece, and when I asked them why they were taking it down, they said it was damaged. So I bought it at a steal! It’s these little purchases that make me ridiculously happy!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It’s your home, so decorate the way you want it – wildly pretty, heart-stoppingly beautiful and most of all comfortable. I know my family puts up a lot with all my décor madness, and I think I owe it to them to make the home as comfortable as possible. In fact, they sometimes play cricket inside the home, and I have left a little rectangular ‘pitch’ for them. Of course, I also have to make sure there are no breakables around.
My Love for brass has been there forever now. Vacations with parents in Tamil Nad n kerala (Southern States in India) meant trips to temples and a compulsory detour to old markets laden with beautiful handmade brass and bronze artifacts. I am quite blessed to have found pieces I love. My collection has grown over the years. Do enjoy the vignettes :)
My love for music prompted me to pick this up. It has been there with me for over a decade. I fondly call the set
A few friends tease me about this idol and call it Organic pillayaar Ganesha). The reason behind this is Lord Ganesha is known for his love for food. Its very rare to find an idol with out a belly :). This idol was a gift from a dear friend and is lean and unconventional.
They were used in homes in the Tamil Nad, Andhra and other parts of the country. These smart looking, well designed bins were made of teak or rosewood, and used to store/pile clothes until laundry was done.

The design is quite similar to that of a post box with the exception that the top is a lid with a latch. Soiled clothes were dumped from above and collected from a slot/door below.

Type of furniture: Laundry Bin
Country of origin: India
Year/era: most over 100- 60 years old
Wood: rosewood or teak
Design era: Art deco/mid century style clean lines / colonial with cane or carvings
Dimensions: 3' x 1' x 1' (generally)

Hand washing and line drying clothes are daily rituals in Indian homes. Such bins fill in a single day given that most were joint families with at least two or sometimes three generations living together.

There is another story of why these bins/basket were very popular - there were times when many families relied on a dhobi (washerman). And the bin came in handy to manage soiled clothes until the washerman came in to collect clothes on the laundry day. There could be slight variations to the design but the overall look and feel remains same. However, lack of space makes it difficult to have such pieces at home :) nowadays.

PS: I keep finding them on reselling and craigslist kind of sites. And get so tempted in getting one home

Preethi is full of surprises. This time around, she made a set of pendant lamps from discarded fan blades.

And here is the story in her own words.

"Pendant lights can be expensive and yet not unique. Here is a quick DIY pendant lights idea.

On my last trip to the weekly Bangalore Sunday market, which happens on the BVK Iyengar Road, I chanced upon these table fan blades in different colors. They weren’t pretty when I saw them, I had to look through a load to get the least dented ones, but I think I could see through the dusty blades and I had an instant idea. I picked up four of them and they sat in a corner of the house for a few weeks before the time came for it to see the light of the day."

"So when I was decorating my husbands office meeting room, I visualized the three fan blades hanging from the ceiling above the table.

How I did it?

"It was just a matter of cutting the wires to 3 different length, attaching the holder and passing it through the fan blades. The wire manager holds the wire tightly in place and conceals the wires connections. Since the connections to be made to the existing building wiring, it needed an electrician for installation. And it was done!

By the time I contacted the owner/seller it was given away. Yes, you read it right. Given away due to lack of buyers. Wish he held onto it for just another evening and these beauties would have been driven to my abode. I could not believe what I heard. :( (Missed browsing the site just one afternoon and see what I missed)
I am told it was custom made in the late 60's. Pure teak and original cotton ropes weaved into such wonderful pieces of art. :)

PS: As I have always maintained that carpenters and craftsmen in india were great in replicating designs. We get to see many such reproductions of internationally known iconic pieces. I have been toying the idea of documenting such reproductions as and when I come across them
