Vintage Love: Multi tasking cabinet!! All Teak and lovely

I came across this beautiful cabinet a few months ago and forgot to share it. Custom made and all teak wonderfully maintained. It has been with a single owner for over 50 years.

Designer: Custom made for the owner (in India)
Time/era: 1960s
Material: Wood and glass
Use: media cabinet, book shelf and curio cabinet

Clean line modernism influenced designers and consumers all over the world. India is where many such pieces were custom made for home owners. And i am glad we can still afford such custom made luxury (if we find the right artisan)

I was in awe when I saw the piece in person. A lovely piece of art!!!

Teak Sofa Set: Vintage eye candy

The local buy sell site had this breathtaking set for sale. By the time I contacted the owner/seller it was given away. Yes, you read it right. Given away due to lack of buyers. Wish he held onto it for just another evening and these beauties would have been driven to my abode. I could not believe what I heard. :( (Missed browsing the site just one afternoon and see what I missed)

I am told it was custom made in the late 60's. Pure teak and original cotton ropes weaved into such wonderful pieces of art. :)

Teak and jute chairs ~ awesomeness!

Off late, a local preloved/used goods buy/sell website has been full of surprises. Many seem to be selling their old furniture. And people like me must be doing a happy dance.

I come across such amazing teak and jute piece, that I seriously wished for a store room :P. (As if i did not have enough stuff already!!)

The ad mentions them as antique Teak chairs. The moment I saw them I knew they looked so similar to the  iconic Harp chairs.

Local sale:
details unknown. The ad only mentions them as antique teak chairs

I am yet to find out if they are original The pictures do not look like the original though.

PS: As I have always maintained that carpenters and craftsmen in india were great in replicating designs. We get to see many such reproductions of internationally known iconic pieces. I have been toying the idea of documenting such reproductions as and when I come across them

Vintage Love : Mid mod furniture

I admit, I did not expect my life to turn topsy-turvy after my son was born. Although, I am loving everything about being a mommy. Some days are tougher than the others. When I look back, his baby phase seems easier than his current toddler stage.

However, I miss blogging for sure.

Vintage Love:
I bought this bookshelf even before he came into our lives, but its such a pleasure to see him enjoy stacking, messing up and rearranging his books. All of two years and this is how keeps it. I am a super proud mom :)

Open shelves encourage him to pick up books.

Style and design timeline:
1950-60
Danish modern

Material:
solid wood with a lovely varnish

The design:
The slender pencil legs and the brass tips make it even more drool worthy. What say!

Utility:
Its petite size makes it super easy for use in a child's room or near a busy living nook. I gather that they were meant to be vinyl record holders. (they would have been a snug fit). Though the shelf looks small, its holds quite a number of books and toys.

This piece has no designer marking or brand name, but we find quite a few of them floating about in the preloved market. Most of them bought it for a super crazy throw away price (happy happy!). Do let me know if you know more

Art Direction ~ Indian Cinema

I had shared a video of a very classy song from a movie called Pyar Kiye Ja in this post >>Here and the post about international influence on Indian cinema- music, decor and fashion etc. The tamil version of the same movie was remade and instead of mid century modern interiors, the art directors chose to go antique-y...see what I mean

french, and english furnishings in the tamil version I(above)

versus

a mix of mid century modern and some very faint french influence via accent pieces in the hindi version (below)
I personally love doing the movies masti magic post....i hope you enjoyed both the songs while letting allthe decor goodness sink in

PS: corrections to terminologies and style references are welcome..i m here to learn :)

Movies masti and magic...International Influence on Indian Cinema

While on my research about the influence of international design. fashion and music on Indian cinema, I keep my eyes open for design trends and art Direction choices in Indian regional and hindi cinema over the years. This song is a classic example of what international influence on Indian Cinema in the mid century and until early 70's.

Each time I post a song, I spot design classics and decor pieces in the video. This time around, I would love you guys to do that for me :)

So, while you enjoy the very pretty Mumtaz and the versatile Mehmood sahab sway to a song sung by Manna Dey and Usha Mangeshkar, play the spotting game...will you :)?!! (The video also includes a very handsome Shashi kapoor and Kishore kumar in a "disguise" :-)

In general, most of the art directors picked stuff they liked from the international scene and imported stuff or custom made them for the sets. I love the way they made everything work for an Indian storylin and with other Indian Accents....cool isnt it!!
