I am a huge fan on old hindi movies (all the late 50's to early 70's) for a very crazy reason. All the drool worthy art direction and the very prominent mid century/danish influence on the decor. Super cool isn't it...want to see what I mean.
While you enjoy the very versatile Rafi on the soundtrack, and a handsome Sunil Dutt wooing a very pretty Saroja Devi ...look at all the Danish /mid century glory at work, beautifying the whole set. :). Dont miss the very prominent tea cart, dining set, hutch and the yummy chairs and the entire living room set. And yes, dont forget the accent wall. Drool~~~
I can share a ton of such movie sets from my inspirations folder. I always wonder, as to what would have happened to all these wonderful accent and decor pieces after the movies were done being shot. I wish I could buy every piece which was ever a part of the Indian film industry...sigh!! Most of my time is spent researching whereabouts of furniture pieces i see in movies of that era...cool right!
The wall and that big cabinet were gorgeous! I don't think I've ever seen an Indian movie before. That was quite a treat! Thanks for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteglad you liked them Dana..this is a bollywood movie from 1967 (i guess)...it is amazing to see how much money was spent importing all the authentic pieces from europe and the americas...:)..most of the bollywood and other indian language movies have been very glamorous and extravagant anyway :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea Sudha- haven't seen this series in any other design blog so far! Yes please! Definitely want to see more such posts from that folder :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Divya...i did a similar post in the initial blog posts...dint think it was appealing to anyone so...quit for a while..i will surely share clips/pics i have saved for my inspiration...i m glad you like it :)
ReplyDeleteAll these sets have very interesting themes. I have seen so many movies having the Barcelona Chairs, and many of the chairs that are now showcased as classic chairs. Also the moldings on the ceiling with the intricate patterns and colors: that was indeed a different era.
ReplyDeleteI think your idea of reviving the interest in designs through these old sets are indeed very good. Don't stop just because people don't respond to it. Many times i also write about things that really appeal to me, but don't find any positive response from any of my friends, but that doesn't bother me, for basically I write for my pleasure only. It is always a pleasure to come to your blog.
Sudha - thats a pretty amazing observation! Very few people notice the sets and background props. I too got totally mesmerized by Saroja Devi's scintillating hips!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have a really keen interest in something - as obviously you do in mid century modern design - you will see it in all sorts of places. My husband who is crazy about surf music found a lot of its influence in these 60's and 70's Hindi movies music!
Totally agree with Rama - writing about this is for your own pleasure, forget about comments. Many folks read it but don't comment but I am positive they enjoy it. You go girl!
